A WEB application, what's that?

"A web application (or web app) is an internet technology term used to describe a computer software program that is run on a web server, unlike computer-based software programs that are stored locally on the Operating System (OS) of a device. Web applications are accessed by the user through a web browser with an active internet connection. These applications are programmed using a client–server modeled structure—the user ("client") is provided services through an off-site server that is hosted by a third-party..."

Can you give some examples of web applications?

You are probalby using web applications all the time. Examples of web applications are your web mail, online -shops, -banking, -auctions and -casinos but also client relationship management systems (CRMs) and multiplayer games. Nowadays even your spreadsheet and word-processor from Google Apps and Microsoft 365 are web applications.

And what are the advantages of web applications?

  • There's nothing to install, computers and phones no matter what their operating system all have a browser nowadays
  • Your data is all in one place stored on the server so it is easier to secure and backup
  • Because your software is centralized in one place it is quick and easy to update too.
  • So your system will always be up-to-date
  • Your system is not bound by office hours, it is available 24 hours a day, every day, anywhere in the world.
  • Your customers and employees can reach your company at any time
  • Staff can be trained on-line at their own pace from home
  • Your clients will always have access to the latest information which you only have to publish once

These advantages are just to name a few there are obviously many more. AVDL has been an advocate of web applications for many years, way before Microsoft and other big companies set example and moved to the cloud. For many businesses the advantages of web based applications over locally run software are many and it is no surprice that the use of SaaS or cloudware over traditional installed software has become the most popular. Web application development is AVDL's core business.

Some WWW history:

In 1990, a contractor at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) called Tim Berners-Lee created a system for CERN researchers to use and share documents and a software application to access those documents on dumb terminals. The system was the initial version of HTML and the application which he called "WorldWideWeb" was the first web browser. Tim Berners-Lee (nowadays Sir Tim Bernars-Lee) started a phenomena that would revolutionize the world as we knew it. In 1993 Mosiac released the world's first popular browser and we all know what happened since, Javascript was born, HTML evolved, new techniques were developed and websites became applications in their own right.

AVDL has been involded in developing websites since those early days in the 90s, first for fun, then for payment and eventually as a profession. Along the way there have been loads of books, courses and studying. AVDL is certified by the Andalusian regional government since 2008. Does it not feel good to know that your project is in the hands of a www veteran? Ready to share your ideas and discuss your next project?

NO SOCIAL NETWORKS?

Sorry, the icons look great and almost seem compulsory but we are not engaged in any social networks. Although AVDL highly recommends its customers to engage in the social networks for certain market segments and age groups we ourselves do not post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Youtube.

A note on social networks from Harvard Business Review:

Social platforms are still reporting robust growth — yes, even Facebook — despite a growing chorus of opposition. Social conversation continues to shape everything from culture to the media cycle to our most intimate relationships. And we now spend more time than ever on our phones, with endless scrolling through our social feeds being a chief reason why.
But dig a little deeper, and a more nuanced picture emerges about social media users today that has important implications for the ways in which brands reach customers. Specifically, when you look at who is — and more importantly, who is not — driving the growth and popularity of social platforms, a key demographic appears to be somewhat in retreat: young people. For example, 2019 findings from Edison Research and Triton Digital show social media usage overall among Americans 12 to 34 years old across several platforms has either leveled off or is waning, while 2019 research from Global Web Index suggests that the amount of time millennial and Gen Z audiences spend on many social platforms is either flat, declining, or not rising as greatly as it has in years’ past.
